TOPIC: May 23, 2016

Which is more important: actual experiences, or the memories that remain when the experiences are over? And, what is your BEST memory?

  1. When I was thinking about what the topic should be this week, I had a lot of different ideas. This I think is an interesting one…
I personally think that the memories are the more important than the actual experiences. I mean, if you never have the actual experiences, I suppose it would be difficult to have the memory from it, but if you don’t have the memory from it, then what was the point of the experience? I have many different memories from different things that I have been told and not even experienced. Stories from my grandparents, etc. that are enjoyable to go back and remind myself of. I also think that the actual experience you can only “experience” once; the memory of the experience can be re-lived over and over again. As far as a BEST memory...now that is a hard one. I am not sure that I actually have a BEST memory. I have many memories that I cherish and each and every one has value and importance to me. From experiences with my children, my husband, family and friends that are no longer with us… so many memories that I cherish. I guess, to sum it up, I vale the memories more than the actual experiences.

    2. I think you're right. If you don't have the memory what's the point. Great work Mrs. Dybas!!

    3. I think the memory a moment creates is the most important. Since you can look back to a great moment with someone or something when your feeling sad or angry. Looking back to great things that happen to you can cause your mind to make you feel whatever emotion happened in that memory. For example, if I'm sad because my aunt couldn't come over or something then I can look back at a bad memory with her and not want her to come over. I do think that actual moments are important too because if they never happened then there would be no memories. Here's an example of a great memory that I have in my life. The memory is when I found out that I was having a baby brother or sister. So my mom and dad had me and my brother sit at the table with a present in front of each of us. We were both so confused and didn't what to say. We eventually got told to open them, so we did. In my gift was a sign that said baby on board. And inside my brothers box was a binky. Right away we both new exactly what that meant. We freaked out. So that's why it's great to have memories. If I didn't have that memory I wouldn't be able to tell the story. That's why I think it's more important to hold on to the memories then to actually experience it once.

    4. You took many things I was going to say in my comment from my idea box, if that sounds ok. What's the point of the experience if you have no memory of it. I hop the memories you have of experiences are quite good, and you don't experience any new bad experiences.

    6. Excellent thoughts! I must agree that I think memories outweigh the experiences only because of the fact that you can relive each experience over and over again. I do think that living in the moment is important, but I like the memories the best! Good Job!

  2. The memory itself sounds more important to me. I would back this up by saying we replay the experience many times in our head. So, we get the experience more than once. But, if you just had the experience you would get it one time, not to mention you would never even have a memory of it so you might as well never have the experience at all. And without memories I would have next to nothing. I have a lot of great memories I have and will be holding on to for years. I also have funny memories, entertaining memories, and memories of doing dumb stuff. If I had to pick the best memory out of all of them it would have to be the day I first started catching the baseball. My dad and had poured in many hours playing catch but, I was always doing something wrong. One day dad threw a pop fly and something clicked. I moved up and caught it right in the glove. I said, "Throw another one!" and it happened again. I could catch the ball! This may not seem very important but I wanted to achieve that goal for very long.

  3. This really got me thinking. I think I like the experience or “being in the moment” itself better. I think this because if you’re just thinking about it or have pictures of it, you’re not going to exactly feel as if it was right then and there. Yah, sure, you might get the feeling in your stomach of how it was. But will it really feel like it was happening then and there? I love the feeling of being in the moment especially because, it will never be told like it was or it will never feel like it actually was. My best memory was winning the championship in my second season for flag. This is my best memory because I had lost to this team in the regular season, so it was time to beat them then. We had mercied them 28-0. I especially had felt happy because the one kid on the team we mercied was very mean to me and is always just trying to put me down. He aggravated me so much so it felt good. He was always telling me how awful I was. Although I had 1004 passing yards and 19 touchdowns that season, which was more than anyone else (by far) in the division. He still tries to put me down to this day. Although it is dumb that he is still mad at me, let’s get back on track. After one of our weaker links scored the touchdown to mercy them and end the game (that is a rule in the playoffs that if the other team goes into mercy the game just automatically ends. In the regular season they get a few chances to get out of mercy) my stepdad/coach threw me up in the air and caught me. I was so happy and excited. After that, we got our first place trophies (that I still have to this day) and when they called my name, I smiled ,accepted it and just jumped for joy! I hope you enjoyed my comment! I can’t wait to read yours! Bye!!! :)

  4. I think this is an interesting question. I would personally love the memory because you want to be able to remember the memory if you’re sad or if you just want to look back on it. But like Mrs. Dybas said what’s the point of living the experience if you won’t remember the memory. But I don’t think I have a favorite memory I’m just a kid and have a lot more memories to remember. If I had to choose I think it would be the time I went to Hershey Park with my cousins. They always make me smile and laugh. Anyway I would want to think back and remember all the fun times I had and all the times my family and I laughed and smiled together. But no memory is less important than the one before. Hope you liked my comment and I can’t wait to read your comments and replies.

  5. I think the actual experiences are more important than the memories because the memory is just a faint feeling while the experiences are having the feeling of it full and clear. It's a memory, but more powerful. For example, Disney World, would you rather go there or just somehow remember? See what I mean! But then I am proving myself wrong when I think. If I were to forget the experiences then the experiences would be pointless! The experiences last a few hours or so but the memories last forever! So pretty much you can’t have one without the other it's like having chocolate when the chocolate has no coco nuts. So I am UNDECIDED! One of my favorite memories is when Kyle(Best friend.) and I went on Kyle's father's boat with my mom dad and Kyle's parents to see fireworks. It was a lot of fun and when we were boating back home a firework went off right above us. I hope you liked my blog.

Great job!

  6. I believe that the memory is more important than the actual experience. Sure, having something happen is always fun, but the memory is something you can hold on to forever! Who needs cheap stuffed animal souvenirs to remember a vacation when you can hold onto the memory forever!
Now, my BEST memory….. Oh YES! I remember it PERFECTLY! It was actually the year that I had Mrs. Dybas as my 2nd grade teacher! I had been wanting a dog for my entire life, so one day my parents took a walk and found a cute, small, fluffy dog walking with neighbors. So my dad goes up to them and says,
“Your dog is so cute!” he asked what kind of dog it was.
“It is a Coton De Tulear” The lady says. She gave my parents the breeder and a ton of information. I still did not know anything about this. They do some research of their own and fall in love with the dogs. They end up picking one out. They deciding to name it Sandy because our family, and the dog, love the beach. Finally on a Sunday morning they decide to tell seven year old Nia. They said that turning eight would be the year that I finally could be responsible for taking care of a puppy. I looked at them for a good minute before I really understood what they were saying. When I did I was surprised that I was able to hold in my scream of joy. That day we went to Petsmart and got every necessity. Each family member picked out one toy. I picked out a squeaky toy pig, my Mom picked a blue, yellow, and red rope, and my Dad picked a hedgehog.
Around a week later the day came to pick up our baby! We drove to the Newark airport and went into the cargo section. After anxiously waiting we were let into a noisy room. A man handed me TINY crate and I looked in to see a tiny puppy who was probably wondering where her family went. It was that moment when I knew I would love her forever. We brought her to our car and we all crowded into the trunk and opened the small latch to the crate. The small dog crept out and slowly began to wag her tail. After around ten minutes of telling each other how cute she was I brought her to the back seat and we began to drive home. She laid down in my lap and closed her eyes. I will love my little pup forever.

  7. I find the experience more important. I find it important because, you will go somewhere for the first time. Like disney. I went to Disney last year. And I had a blast. But now It's over. It is kinda sad to look back on memories because it maybe be something you don't want to remember. So compared to experience and memories I would have to pick experience.
My best memory would have to be the first time I went to Disney. I loved it. Because I had never been there. Although I had wanted to go for forever. And then I had finally gone. But now I want to go again. But that is what I just think. Other people might feel different. They might pick memories. But I choose experience. That is what I chose. And you can make me change my mind about it. Other than that. Thank you for reading.

  8. I personally believe that the memory itself is better, since you can play it over and over again in your head as many as you wish to. The experience you can only live once, and what is the point of the experience if you have no memory of it. My best memory is probably when I first started to play softball, I was so excited to play, since I watched my older sister, Caroline play it when she was 5. I was always sit with her and her team after they “won a game”, or “tied”, but really, nobody won since nobody kept score. Everyone on the list would go once, and whichever one was the lucky one of being last hits a homerun, and brings everyone home. Which is a “grand slam”, when everyone is on base and the batter up brings everyone home, which is a home run, too.
I still play softball to this day, my position is catcher, and I love being it, even though it is one of the hardest positions on the field. The hardest are catcher and pitcher, since the pitcher’s pitch starts the whole play if it’s good everyone will cheer, while if it’s bad they will encourage you to try to do better. Catcher has to catch every ball the pitcher throws, even if it ‘s high, low, or in the middle. There is drop third strike, walks dead ball, and not knowing where the pitcher pitched the ball which could costs runs for the other to score on. My point is I believe memories are better, and my best one is playing softball.

  9. I personally believe that the memories left behind when experiences have ended are more important. I want to look back on the good, the bad, and the things I should or shouldn’t have done when I die. I want to be able to think back on fun, remembering worthy events that have happened in my life. I want to look back and say, “Oh remember that time when I...” or, “Man I can’t believe when…” It’s those little or big, sad or happy moments that deserve remembrance. Plus, if you have a life like the Baudelaire orphans, those moments and memories can save your life. The orphans, from Lemony Snicket’s books, often find solutions in their memories of their long lost parents. Without those memories, Klaus, the middle child, would have sliced Charles in half, while hypnotised, with a saw machine. Instead, he used his memories to create a debarker and gum fishing pole to pull Charles out of the path of the saw. I think life without memories doesn’t mean half as much as it does with memories. My best memory was the day Charlie was born. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was pulled mid-recess to drive to the hospital to meet the newest member of my family. We watched tv and ate chocolate bars, sandwiches, and a fist load of other things we bought at the cafeteria. Though that experience ended, the memories last forever. So, I believe that memories left behind when experiences have ended are more important than the experiences themselves.

Having knowledge is great but if the experiences didn’t come with happiness I don’t know what I would do. I think my happiest memory is when I was at my aunt’s house we were sitting around eating sweets at 1:30 in the morning. My aunt and uncle were telling us stories about their childhood. They had the most amazing wild stories. My uncle told most of the stories. My aunt said she would tell me them when I got older because the stories were to “scary” apparently. Now that I’m older I might ask to hear to them now, I’m looking forward to that. This day was really fun.I spent the whole day with my family and I love them. That is definitely my best memory yet hope I can make more

    1. I agree with you that the memories are better than the experience. As I've said, what is the point of having the experience, if as soon as it is over, it's gone! Having the memory gives us the opportunity to relive the experience over and over again! Great job!

    2. Yes! Thank you for agreeing with me! That means more people like the memory, so far! Keep up the good work!

    3. That's true because then you can remember what you did when you were little. Great work!!

    4. Your aunt and uncle probably didn't want you to have nightmares if their stories were that "scary". Otherwise, I agree that the memories are better than the experience themselves. You did an amazing job, can't wait to read your nest comment.

    5. I really liked this one! I like how you used family involved with memeories. I see why having the knowledge wouldn't make you happy.

  11. In my opinion, the memory itself is WAY more important than the event. If you had an important event and then not even remember it, what's the point. Let’s say you had the best day of your life. Tomorrow, you won’t remember. What’s the point of life then? You couldn’t learn because you would just forget. Nothing would stay in your mind. It would just be pointless.

My favorite memory is when I found my passions; writing and singing. Personally, I believe I am good at both of these things. It’s my favorite because I can escape reality through these things. It opens up a new world of words and sounds. Everything seems to go away- my worries, anxiety, and everything else. I only focus on those things. The words flow through either my pencil or mouth and it is the best feeling when you are praised for the things you do.

    1. You stated nearly exactly what my thoughts are on this topic! What's the point of the experience if you can't have the memories to follow? Although the experience gives you the initial "rush" of feelings, the memories give the constant reinforcement of all that you felt. Great job!

    2. Hmmmm… I agree. Without the memory, how will you REMEMBER the experience. Keep up the good work!

    4. Ana, yours is BY FAR my FAVORITE so far, no offense to the others. I love singing and writing, writing allows to express your feeling into a book, article, poem, ext. Then, singing you don't even have to think about it's great, I like it better when I'm not doing it in public.

  12. That choice to me is obvious actual experiences! Because remembering an experience isn’t the same to me as living it. When you have a wonderful experience and it gives you a head rush, it’s not the same when you re-imagine it. Two reasons why, one reason is that the physical force or senses that pick up surroundings don’t really come back in memory when you have an experience. Reason two in an experience it’s hard to remember what exactly happened after especially when you have a strong emotion like anger. It’s hard to recall little details when you’re angry like if you have ever been in a fight with a sibling and the next day you can barely remember what was exactly said.
My best memory would have to be when I got my first painting set from my mom. I don’t mean it was my very first painting set I mean it was the first my mom used when she was a kid and gave it to me. When she gave the set to me I felt like I had been given a diamond ring, even though it was a flat tin can with a thin plastic tray of solid water colors. The paints meant alot to me. My mom used to do watercolor when she was younger so the used paints made it feel like we have a connection more than mother and daughter.

  13. I think that the memories that remain after the experiences are more important. My reasoning is that without memories what would the experiences be worth if you couldn’t remember them? I mean yeah the experiences are fun and all, but that is just for the moment. I feel as though without memories we would live life in a blur. Not being able to remember anything we’ve ever done!

My best memory would have to be going to disney with my Mom, G-ma (Grandma) and my Aunt Sue.I was 9 years old and I went along with my cheer team for nationals. This was an amazing time because my family finally had time to relax and just have fun with no worries!I specifically remember one event. The light show. The light show is an event where they cast lights onto Cinderella’s Castle and they form these absolutely breathtaking scenes and characters. This was by far my best and fondest memory.

    1. I must agree with you that the memories, to me, are way more important than the experiences, simply because of the reasons you stated. what's the point of the experience if you don't have the memory to relive? The many times I've been to Disney is also a favorite of mine! Great job!

  14. I prefer the experience better than the memories. The memories will just tell you “oh that was a fantastic day!” You might be saying Thats really good!! Well not until you start thinking “ Wait will i ever even do this again? During the experience you will have so much fun and think like there is no tomorrow! Thats why i think experience is more important but now whats my favorite memory!?

My favorite memory is when i went to Madame Tussauds Wax museum. It was the most fun time ever! I could see the realistic looking wax people in the shape and look of so many different types of celebritiies! Like Katy Perry, Albert Einstein, and so much more in so many variaties!!

The reason behind Madame Tussauds was so i could get a picture with the one direction figures! This is my blog for this week and i hope you enjoyed it! I also look forward to reading you thoughts!

    1. I think that your thoughts are great, however, I ask you the question...If you have the experience, but not the memory, what's the point? I feel that the experience allows for the "rush" of life, but the memory allows for the reliving of the experience. I kind of think that the memories are the best of both worlds! Great job!

    6. THAT IS WHAT I KEEP SAYING!!!!! Experiences you are living this moment. With memories you just kinda think about what you did. And ponder about the fact if this will happen again or it will remain a one time thing.

  15. This is a good question. I think the memories are more important. You can always look back on memories and recall what a great time you had.It makes really good stories to tell after.I know people say “live in the moment” but moments don't last forever and memories do.I think my favorite memory is with my mom.My mom and I go to NYC every year for my birthday and sometimes for fun .I started going there when i was a baby but obviously i cant remember that.I do remember when i was about 3 though. We when to times square and i saw the big Christmas tree.It was gigantic and so beautiful. Then we went to the big Toys are Us.I don't think they still have it but there was a humongous barbie house and since i was 3 I spent like 2-3 hours in it looking at every individual barbie.also there were 2 floors.Memories are so important to me because they never go away.

    6. I find it funny how you said you looked at it foe 2-3 hours. But I used to do the same thing when I was smaller looking at all the monster high dolls.Even though they were the same exact doll that I had. Just with different clothing. And I would argue with my parents saying that it is different when it really wasn't.
